With such an expansive playground for thrill-seekers, there is one place where you can get a taste of the great backcountry side of Alaska while relaxing in solitude – Borealis Basecamp.
Borealis Basecamp is an adventurous Alaskan winter wonderland within the Boreal Forest. In addition to being in complete solitude with over 100 acres, visitors are able to have an experience, complete with a variety of activities, versus your everyday hotel stay. Options include dog sledding, snowmachining, meeting reindeer, and exploring the Artic Circle, to name a few. Each activity is unique and provides insight into how it ties into Alaskan roots. Below is a review of what you can expect as you embark on your adventure with Borealis Basecamp.
Reindeer Meet & Greet:
It’s not every day you get to meet reindeer; however, at Borealis Basecamp, these cuddly creatures call this space home. During this excursion, guests will learn about the resident reindeer and their lives at Basecamp while feeding them tasty treats. The experience is about 30 minutes, and guests are able to snag some pretty unique photos while surrounded by evergreen trees in their playpen.
Dog Sledding:
Sledding in Alaska is quintessential. It’s more than an activity, it’s a tradition that links Alaska's important past to the present. During this experience, guests are able to meet the powerful pack, typically composed of a mix of huskies (with other breeds) due to their endurance, speed, temperament, and ability to withstand extreme weather, while learning the ins and outs of the sport from the musher. Next, visitors will take their places on the sled before takeoff. Zip through the trails with about 5-7 dogs, depending on size, who will pull you and your party for an unforgettable ride. The mile loop typically takes about ~20 minutes and is well worth it. Plus, guests will get a chance to play with plenty of puppies (aka, snow dogs in training).
6-Hour White Mountain Snow Machine or UTV Tour:
Borealis Basecamp has activities for all skill levels and comfortability; however, the White Mountain Snow Machine tour reigns supreme. During this 6-hour tour, visitors will trek alongside the Trans-Alaska Pipeline before dipping into the Boreal Forest. With the powerful snow machine (complete with hand warmers to combat the chilling temperatures), guests will be able to catch some air (and speed) as they trek up to the White Mountains.

“The snowmachine tour is an exhilarating and unparalleled experience through the Alaskan backcountry,” states tour guide Ryan Madaris. The tour covers about 30 miles roundtrip and each rider is in for an adventure of a lifetime through the snowy wilderness.
Atop the mountainous region, guests can take in the stunning scenery and tips of pine trees below as Wickersham Dome is perfectly nestled in the White Mountains and creates a perfect lookout point. Cozy up in the dome while feasting on a delicious warm meal prepared by your tour guide with the help of the chef of Latitude 65 before making your way back to Basecamp.
