As I stepped onto the Napa Valley Wine Train, a magical feeling, reminiscent of the historic golden age, came over me. Booking an excursion on the Napa Valley Wine Train is a uniquely elevated experience in Napa Valley. Surrounded by vineyards and a historic railway, a single ticket transports you back in time. Refurbished Pullman railcars and a Michelin-level multi-course meal paired with romantic ambiance define this nostalgic journey on the Napa Valley Wine Train.

Experience the charm of the Napa Valley Wine Train, featuring nine beautifully designed cars that offer a unique and memorable journey. I’ll admit, after my initial excursion, I was curious to see if each experience was indeed different. Was it worth exploring each experience the Napa Valley Wine Train had to offer? In short, yes! My mind was simply blown away at the variety both on the train and off.
For first-timers, I suggest arriving 30-45 minutes prior to departure to soak up the train-station vibes. Check out the gift shop and have a glass of champagne in the waiting area, and take your time. If you ask a local, “time doesn’t exist” when you’re in the Napa Valley - let that mindset begin to set here. Arrive early and enjoy the experience.
We opted for the Grgich Hills Estate option, where guests are welcomed to begin the journey with a champagne toast prior to kicking off the celebrations. Shortly after boarding, guests can expect bread service and choose their meal option for the incredible three-course meal. When it comes to the delicious options, you can’t go wrong. From a tender short rib to perfectly cooked Atlantic salmon and seasonal risotto, each dish is crafted with top-tier ingredients and local goods that fully highlight the variety of flavors that Napa Valley has to offer.
Halfway through, guests disembark for an hour-long wine tasting at Grgich Hills Estate. The film “Bottle Shock” is loosely based on Mike Grgich, who crafted the 1973 Chateau Montelena Chardonnay that won against French wines in a blind tasting, putting Napa Valley on the map. The tasting room showcases the winery’s accolades and the beauty in the vines and winemaking process. Grgich Hills practices regenerative farming, promoting healthy soil and ecosystem, including utilizing sheep and owls for pest control and natural herbicides, which helps reduce atmospheric carbon dioxide. Family-owned since 1977, Grgich Hills Estate is a worthwhile detour to understand its role in Napa Valley’s rise.
In addition to the above excursion, guests can opt to stay on the train for the elevated Vista Dome experience or the Gourmet Express Lunch. Whichever option you’re splurging for, each will provide undeniable views and cushioned seats as you pass through a few renowned vineyards such as Charles Krug, Robert Mondavi, Whitehall Lane Winery (which was recently voted as “Best Tasting Room” by Napa Valley Life Magazine, Reader’s Choice Awards), and more. Check out our Whitehall Lane Winery review here!
