Being right in the heart of the well-known SXSW, a 10-day celebration in Austin, Texas celebrating film, music, and entertainment, it is only right to discuss Vince Grant as he recently released his latest CD, "My Depression is Always Trying to Kill Me". The CD includes the single "Oceans II" which was produced by the highly acclaimed Alex Nasonov.

Originally from Chicago, Vince Grant currently lives in Los Angeles and has one heck of a musical journey under his belt. He has played in various bands, touring, and even playing at SXSW.

His struggles with drug and alcohol may have derailed him, however, his openness and willingness to discuss only strengthen the bond between him and his listeners.  It also has made him a more powerful artist and it prevails through the music displayed on his latest album "My Depression is Always Trying to Kill Me". "Drugs, alcohol, depression, they took me out," stated Grant. After a successful recovery, he channeled his experiences into a new 5 song EP. Free from the constraints of a band situation he feels he has found his authentic voice and a style he can call his own.

For Grant, songs such as "Oceans II" serve as both a revealing personal journal and a form of empowering therapy: “I write songs to cope. I'd like to say I write songs to heal, but that may be asking too much," Grant has stated.

"Edge of the World" is a single that feels like the heart and soul of the album and its meaning. Lyrics such as: "I'm sorry for all of my transgressions and i'm sorry for my careless ways. i'm sorry for all my selfishness, and i'm sorry for my anger too." He continues, "At the edge of the world - standing. At the edge of the world- all alone". Overcoming the inner struggles and battles, this single seems to pay homage and own up to past mistakes.

The overall album is very easy to listen to It almost has a sound similar to bands in the early 2000s. Soft melodies filled with meaningful lyrics. The balance has proven to work for many artist. While I may not listen to this album on repeat it is a nice 'pick me up' and a nice change of pace from other contenders.
