Celebrity Talk - Up Close with Greg Webster Founder of Katalyst on Their Debut Album "Nine Lives"
Katalyst recently released its debut album, Nine Lives! The debut is infused with the free spirit of jazz exploration, the group's forward-thinking sound is impossible to pigeon-hole into one genre. Nine Lives grips with the energy of infinite possibility and digs in with a drive that sets it apart – forward propulsion that reflects the very movement of the Los Angeles jazz scene itself. Conceived solely on an improv basis, the album represents a highlight reel of two months of Sunday jam sessions that Katalyst spent together at their home base in Inglewood, California.
Recently, they released their new single, WhatsAName from their upcoming debut album Nine Lives. “WhatsAname” grips with the energy of infinite possibility, dusted with cosmic character and a dug-in drive that sets it apart – forward propulsion that reflects the very movement of the Los Angeles jazz scene itself.
Identify LA got the opportunity to speak with the founder of Katalyst, Greg Webster on their debut album, and why it’s the release we need at the moment.
Identify LA: How did you get your start in music?
Greg Webster: I started at an early age. My father was an organist in church so I was exposed to music/ musicians and musicianship at a very early age. I can’t explain exactly why but the drums just “spoke” to me from the very beginning.
IDLA: How would you describe your sound?
GW: I would say our sound is a direct result of our individual love and respect of music. It embodies elements from the vast spectrum of the African diaspora (Jazz, Gospel, Soul, Blues, Samba etc..). All of our musical influences are revered because they pushed boundaries and created something that was authentic and necessary, I truly believe the direction of our sound is following in that same spirit.
IDLA: Congrats on your newly released debut album, Nine Lives. Tell us the inspiration behind Nine Lives?
GW: Thank You! This is our debut album and it's nine of us in the band..Prior to this album we would play tunes that individual members would bring in. But for Nine Lives we all collectively created each song so you're literally hearing a blend of each individual voice on every song.
IDLA: Who are your musical influences?
GW: I’ll start with Stevie Wonder. For me he has music figured out on a scientific level, each of his songs will move me in a way where I can physically feel my body responding, His catalogue is ridiculous and vast. Maurice White and RZA are two men I really admire and look up to in terms of leadership. Yes, they are musical geniuses but it’s their ability to put “self” aside and create an environment that will allow the community to flourish
IDLA: Describe your band's creative process? Where do you pull inspiration from?
GW: We draw inspiration from how we feel and how we feel is influenced by so many elements. Me personally, I pull inspiration from gratitude.
