Recently, I tried products from Helen Rose Skincare and at first glance – I’m impressed. The all-natural vegan skincare line is designed to moisturize, heal and restore dry, damaged and irritated skin while soothing mood disruptions such as anxiety, depression, and insomnia. Basically, it’s the skincare line you need to provide beautiful skin AND cheer up from the emotional rollercoaster that was 2020.

I had the chance to speak with the Founder and Owner of Helen Rose Skincare Co., Day Bibb on her creations, lack of representation in the beauty industry and beyond.

Identify LA: What prompted the creation of Helen Rose Skincare?

Day Bibb: I created Helen Rose Skincare as a way to create revenue for my non-profit Om Thrive, which provides yoga to domestic abuse survivors. My mom, the original Helen Rose, inspired me to make things on my own. Growing up, if we didn't have a product, my mom would look up the ingredients and make it for us. She taught me you can always make something fresh and better if you make it yourself. I applied this lesson when my daughters were born with eczema and sensitive skin. The doctors wanted to put them on steroids, and I didn’t want that. I asked myself, what would my mom do? So, I researched ingredients, skin absorption levels and tried several family recipes. It eventually led me to Helen Rose Skincare line’s first batch and our best-selling nut-free eczema butter made with cupuçua.

IDLA: What is the larger mission of Helen Rose?

DB: Helen Rose is on a mission to provide equitable access to wellness resources for survivors of abuse and trauma and under-served communities of color. A portion of every purchase directly funds Om Thrive, which provides yoga and healing resources via a digital platform. We pursue this mission by centering Black and brown people in our imagery and providing organic skincare products to moisturize, heal, and restore dry, damaged, and irritated skin, especially for those with eczema. Each product features one of nine scents, including an unscented, that addresses mood disorders such as anxiety, depression, and insomnia.

IDLA: Where does the founder hope to take her business in the next year/and in the years to come?

DB: I plan to scale my business nationally in pursuit of Helen Rose becoming a household brand name in the skincare industry. I would love to partner with Nordstrom or Bloomingdales for an in-store activation and get my products in the hands of my favorite melanin-rich celebrities and entrepreneurs like Lupita Nyong’o and Supa Cent. Also, I’m a huge sports fan (Go Bills!) and I’d love to see my favorite football players using my foot soaks because Black men deserve self-care too!

IDLA: Do you think there is a lack of representation in the skincare industry? And if so, what can be done to help change that?

DB: Yes, there is a huge lack of representation in the skincare industry. We all play a role in changing the skincare industry. The gap Helen Rose is actively working to close is the lack of marketing images that reflect Black people, non-binary and queer folks with dark skin. At Helen Rose, we prioritize working with Black, queer, and non-binary models and hiring Black creatives. We contribute to change in the industry by centering themes of the Black family, Black love, non-binary Black folks, and Black children in our imagery. As a mother of two brown skin, young Black women, it’s essential for me to use my platform to create images and messages that reflect Black people’s beauty.

If you’re looking to improve your skincare regimen definitely give this brand a chance. The ingredients are optimal, natural, and full of items your body already craves. Feed the skin you’re in and support a skincare line that gives back!
